I also recommend one of my favorite restaurants in Dublin, The Winding Stair Bookshop & Cafe, over the Ha’Penny Bridge. Pedestrian streets in Dublin (photo taken in 2019) I’m looking forward to the music and the craic (craic = fun) that comes along with it in 2021. The end of October marks the Cork Jazz Music Festival, packed with musicians, fans and locals. (It was cancelled in 2020, but there are dates on the calendar for 2021!) But this particular Festival is about more than food-it’s really a celebration of everything there is to love about Cork: the craftsmen, the land, the people. My parents now live in Bantry in West Cork, home every September to the West Cork Food Festival. Here I am raving about it and I’m not even a veggie-hand me an Irish chicken Fillet Roll (which you can’t really find outside of Ireland), and I’m a happy girl. When you go there, try the seasonal dishes on offer they change up the menu frequently. Some of the finest vegetarian chefs in the world have trained there. You’ll find one of the best vegetarian restaurants in the world in Cork: Paradiso. One of the great misconceptions about Ireland that I love to correct is about the cuisine: it’s underrepresented and amazing. When you stop in, you’re bound to have a wonderful conversation it’s not the kind of place where anyone’s on their phone. It got its name from a time when people would bring their sheep to market and stop off there for a pint of Beamish (Cork’s stout). It’s a dark, tiny place, filled with candles and dramatic murals on the walls. My favorite pub in the whole of Ireland is there: The Mutton Lane Inn, established back in 1780.

The last time I was back home for a visit I took my 8-year old niece there the hustle and bustle and wonderful shops reminded her of the markets in Barcelona, where she was born. The English Market in Cork is the center of all things amazing, where you’ll find the best food and conversation in the county. She had to take a boat to go to secondary school! They raised my brother, sister, and me in Ballincollig, which at the time was a village but it has since grown and is now considered part of Cork city proper. We call Cork “The People’s Republic,” because anyone born and raised in Cork is very proud of it! My parents are from West Cork my dad hails from Bantry, known for its beautiful harbor my mum is from a tiny island off the Beara Peninsula called Bere Island. It’s my absolute pleasure to share everything wonderful about my home, especially with those who have never been there before. But I’m looking forward to the time when I can return to Ireland, where I was born and raised.
